THE MODERNIST ROUTE_
 |
Just 10 kilometres from Salou, Reus was the birthplace, in 1852, of the universal architect Antoni Gaudí i Cornet and the city in which he spent his infancy and adolescence. However, despite Gaudí's close connection to the city, it was actually architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner who left the greatest imprint on Reus.
The arrival of Domènech i Montaner marked the beginning of a brilliant period of Modernism in Reus when he took charge of the construction project of the Pere Mata Psychiatric Institute , begun in 1898, which acted as a precedent for the Hospital de Sant Pau in Barcelona. He was subsequently commissioned to carry out other works in the city, including the Casa Rull, the Casa Navàs and the Casa Gasull, as well as other lesser-known works such as the funerary chapel of the Margenat family, a library for the Font de Rubinat family and the Casa Llopis warehouse. Reus currently preserves the greatest number of Lluís Domènech i Montaner buildings after Barcelona.

Casa Rull (1900) was a project for the notary Pere Rull and different symbols relating to his profession can be seen on the façade.

Casa Navàs (1901-1907), along with the Pere Mata Institute, is the finest example of the city's architecture. The house was commissioned by Reus merchant Joaquim Navàs. The different architectural and decorative elements of the beautiful façade were inspired by Gothic and Plateresque art. The interior of the house preserves all its ornamental opulence. The shop on the ground floor is particularly interesting, given that is has been almost perfectly preserved since its construction. This building has been declared a Historic Artistic Monument. Casa Gasull (1911) was built by Fèlix Gasull, the owner of an oil export company. The building was planned to house the company's warehouse as well as being a home and combines Modernist and Noucentista elements.
